Pope Benedict XVI is resigning effective at the end of the month.  The Vatican is confirming the news this morning.

Benedict has served as Pope for eight years, becoming Pope in April 2005.  He took over for Pope John Paul the Second.  He is not the first to resign, but the first to do so in centuries.

Pope Benedict XVI says that his strength is no longer adequate to continue.

He was 78 years old when he became Pontiff, becoming Pope Benedict XVI after previously serving the Catholic Church as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger.
