The late Mother Teresa will become a saint in September.

Pope Francis, who cleared Mother Teresa for canonization in December, says that she will officially become a saint in the Roman Catholic Church on September 4, 2016.

Mother Teresa was born in the Ottoman Empire as Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in 1910. She died in 1997 at the age of 87.  She was a member of the Order of the Sisters of Loreto, before founding the Missionaries of Charity order in 1946 to care for the poor in India.

She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and was affectionately known as the "saint of the gutter."

Pope Francis signed the canonization decree yesterday.
