LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (AP) — A popular state-owned beach in the southern Adirondacks is closed for the second time in less than a week because of high levels of bacteria.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation announced Tuesday evening that it has closed Lake George Beach due to coliform counts that exceed health department guidelines.

The DEC says it's also closing all waters in the area known as Dog Beach, located just west of what's also known as Million Dollar Beach.

It's the second time in five days the beaches have been closed due to high fecal coliform levels. They were reopened over the weekend, but tests results that came back Tuesday afternoon showed bacteria levels had risen again.

Lake George Beach, located on the lake's southern end, will reopen as soon as coliform levels are below acceptable levels.
