President Barack Obama's half-brother Malik Obama is running for Governor of Siaya, Kenya.

If he wins today, he will lead during what is considered to be a tense time in the country.  Officers assigned to peacekeeping roles for the country's elections were hacked to death by gangs.  More than half a million people were displaced during violence in the past several years.  A new constitution in 2010 created 47 political counties, each to be presided over by a governor.

Barack and Malik Obama's father was from Kenya.  Aside from his brother, the President has other relatives in Kenya.  The President has said that he would visit Kenya in an official capacity if the elections were fair and transparent.  Barack Obama has not visited the country since 2006, when he was a United States Senator.
