In a surprise move, Presidential spokesman Jay Carney announced today he is stepping down.

President Obama made the announcement today in the White House briefing room.

Carney is a former correspondent and bureau chief for time Magazine, and called his time as spokesman and honor and a joy.

President Obama said that Carney will be replaced by Deputy White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest.

Obama called Carney a great press secretary and a good friend.

Carney was the President's Spokesman since early 2011.
