PSC Approves Overlay For 315 Area Code Region

The New York State Public Service Commission has approved an overlay in the 315 area code region.

In making its decision, the PSC determined that the best way to meet demand for new telephone numbers in the region and to minimize customer impact was to overlay a new area code over the existing 315 area code.

All telephone carriers in the 315 area code region have 45 day to file a plan outlining the steps necessary to implement the overlay.

The overlay lets all telephone users in the region keep their current phone numbers, including the 315 area code.  It's estimated that the 315 area code will run out of phone numbers by early 2017.

The 315 area code region covers 18 counties.
