A bat found inside a home in the Town of New Hartford has tested positive for the rabies virus.

The Oneida County Health Department says two residents of the home must undergo post rabies exposure treatment.

One of their pets will get a rabies booster vaccination.

Officials say the resident did the right thing by capturing the bat and calling the Health Department.

Because there had been an exposure, the bat was tested and it was found to be infected with rabies.
