The Oneida County Health Department says a raccoon in Boonville has tested positive for rabies.

They say the raccoon came in contact with a dog with an unknown veterinary history, and the dog had to be euthanized.

Signs to look for in a rabid animal are: staggering, convulsions, choking, frothing at the mouth and paralysis. Many animals will make unusual sounds. “If you see these symptoms with an animal please stay away from the animal and keep your pets away as well,” said Phyllis Ellis, Director of the Oneida County Health Department.

Health Department officials say it's important to keep your pets' rabies vaccinations up-to-date.

The OCHD will be holding a Rabies Clinic on October 21st at the Community Activity Center in Sherrill from 3:30 to 5:30.
