DALLAS (AP) — Accounts from police and relatives suggest the man authorities have linked to a weekend attack on Dallas police headquarters showed signs of violence and mental instability for years beforehand.

Police said the suspect, who planted pipe bombs outside the headquarters and fired at officers early Saturday from an armored van, told them he was James Boulware. A medical examiner hasn't officially confirmed the suspect's identity.

The gunman was shot to death by a police sniper after a chase and standoff.

An arrest warrant affidavit shows Boulware was accused two years ago of choking his mother. James Boulware's brother, Andrew Boulware, told The Associated Press his brother showed signs of mental instability. And Boulware's mother said in a statement, "We lost him to mental health long before we lost him to death."
