One of the heroes that emerged from the 15 hour standoff with Kurt Myers, the alleged perpetrator in the shootings in Herkimer and Mohawk, was a German shepherd named Ape.

Ape was an FBI K9 who was the first officer to rush into the former General Herkimer Hotel where Myers was holed up. Myers shot Ape before he was killed by law enforcement.  Ape was still alive when he was removed from the abandoned building but died on his way to a veterinarian.

This was Ape's first action and had only been on the FBI's force for two months.  In a live feed from the scene just before the raid on the building. Ape could be seen with his tail wagging, eager to be a part of his first police action.

Ape was 2.
