MARCY, N.Y. (AP) — A newspaper is reporting that a New York psychiatric hospital for inmates operated without legally required oversight while two inmate deaths, 40 assaults and 25 sex offenses triggered police responses between 2012 and 2016.

The Journal News reports that there were 210 criminal incidents at the Central New York Psychiatric Center in rural Marcy, New York during that time.

The newspaper reported Wednesday that no board of visitors has been convened to monitor the facility. The governor-appointed board is supposed to serve as a key independent monitor and pursue accountability.

The Journal News obtained police records and psychiatric center documents through Freedom of Information Law requests.

Spokesman James Plastiras of the state Office of Mental Health says said the center has been unable to recruit to its board of visitors.
