Ryan Reynolds says after signing his oath of office April 1, he gets right to work as mayor of the village of Whitney Point.

The 28-year-old Reynolds, a Democrat, defeated Republican challenger Jason Somers by a margin of 83 to 73 in the election two weeks ago.

In an interview on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Reynolds said he was excited about becoming mayor after serving on the village board.

Reynolds said one of his first tasks as mayor will be to pursue new grant opportunities for the village. He noted funding from various grants recently helped cover some of the costs of revitalizing the downtown area and a major sewer project.

The incoming mayor also said he hopes to develop a marketing effort to make people more aware of what Whitney Point has to offer.

Frozen water lines are continuing to pose a problem for several village residents. Reynolds said he believed about nine Whitney Point water customers remained without water service because of frozen lines. He said the village has worked to provide assistance to those customers still lacking regular service until their water lines can thaw.
