ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — The Rochester Institute of Technology has been awarded a $437,000 federal grant to help develop antibiotics designed to fight drug-resistant bacteria.

Rep. Louise Slaughter of Rochester announced the grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences on Thursday.

Health officials are concerned about the emergence of so-called superbug bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics.

RIT researchers will use the grant money to try to develop narrow-spectrum antibiotics, which are effective against specific types of bacteria.
