ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — A New York man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for beating his girlfriend in an hours-long attack that moved her to write a song about domestic violence.

Jason Calvert was sentenced for attempted murder in Supreme Court in Rochester Wednesday.

The Monroe County District Attorney's office says Calvert beat his 24-year-old girlfriend through the night and into the morning after she arrived at his Rochester home on Nov. 29.

While she was hospitalized with severe facial injuries, victim Darrian Amaker wrote a song about domestic violence and videotaped herself singing it. Prosecutors say she posted the video to social media to persuade other victims to seek help.
