One New York county is considering regulating drones and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) within its borders.

Rockland County Legislator Jay Hood, Jr. is requesting input from the public during this week's hearing.

Hood, who has previously served as Assistant Village Attorney for Haverstraw, is worried about the possible unethical or illegal uses of drones.  In a written release from his office Hood says:

"Currently, there are no state or federal regulations regarding who may purchase a drone and that represents a safety risk to members of the public.  Drones may be purchased by sex offenders or individuals with criminal backgrounds and used for unlawful purposes...These aircraft can be used by peeping toms or a contentious neighbor. A resident should have a reasonable expectation of privacy in his or her home.”

Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco is quoted as well saying, "The unrestricted use of...drones...has become an increasing challenge for law enforcement."  Falco has expressed specific concern about the use of drones near the county's correctional facility.

The hearing is scheduled to begin at 7:05pm on April 7, 2015.  Meeting schedules and agendas are available at: www.rocklandgov.com.  Because the agenda is always subject to change those who are interested may also call: (845) 638.5100.

A decision by Rockland County on the drone issue is expected to be closely watched by other counties within the state.
