Recently we told you how Google Earth's latest update included a 3D view of whatever map you're looking at with some pictures of Utica. They looked pretty cool, but we don't think the technology works on Rome.

Maybe it's because Rome doesn't have as many tall buildings as Utica, but these pictures look a bit like Google needs to step up their 3D game.

Starting with this shot of Ft. Stanwix, it looks a lot like the regular 2D images you would get from Google Earth. You can kind of make out the ditches and walls of the fort.

The same goes for this shot of Griffiss. Maybe because the buildings are closer to the ground you don't get the 3D effect?

Here's a look at Rome Memorial Hospital in 3D. Or is it? I kind of looks like one of those old pop-up books that is slightly broken.

Veterans Memorial Park and St. Peter's Church are the focus of the last picture. These look much better and more 3D-like than any of the other Rome shots. You can see the church in 3D and even some of the trees.

Maybe it's the difference in building size that makes 3D work better or maybe the system isn't fully ready yet, we'll check out some more area landmarks to help you decide in the coming weeks.
