NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina police officer is recovering after being shot during a standoff.

Local news outlets report that officer Wayne Pavlischek was shot Monday evening in North Charleston.

North Charleston Police Deputy Chief David Cheatle says police were called about a driver who tried to run over a pedestrian. Officials went to a home where the suspect's car was parked.

Police say the suspect pointed a rifle from a second story window and fired, wounding Pavlischek, who was wearing a bullet proof vest. Cheatle says Pavlischek's vest stopped the bullet. He was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

The unidentified suspect was also taken to a hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds. There was no word on his condition.

A police spokesman did not immediately respond to a message Tuesday morning.
