'Tis definitely the season for giving.

An anonymous couple recently put a $500,000 check in a Salvation Army kettle outside of a supermarket in Rosemount, Minn.

It's believed to be the largest-ever donation to the state's branch of the organization.

Obviously, the donation is generous and should put into perspective just how enormous it is. That's because the red kettles typically take in about $30 an hour.

The couple who gave the money said they "wanted to honor one of their fathers, who served in the trenches in World War I."

They also hoped their action would spur others on to donate, as well.

While time will tell if that happens, there's no denying they've reminded people about the power of giving.
