NEW PALTZ, N.Y. (AP) — Sen. Bernie Sanders is heading to the Hudson Valley to rally for a fellow progressive champion running for a hotly contested congressional seat.

The independent senator from Vermont will speak at a rally for Democrat Zephyr Teachout on Friday in New Paltz. Teachout is running against Republican John Faso in a high-profile race for an open swing seat.

Sanders has continued to support selected Democrats since ending his presidential bid. He's scheduled to appear in Pittsburgh later Friday to rally for Senate candidate Katie McGinty.

Teachout became a liberal standard bearer during her surprisingly strong 2014 primary challenge to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's re-election bid. She grew up in Vermont.

Faso served in the state Assembly for 16 years and became the House's minority leader.
