WASHINGTON (AP) — Bernie Sanders is giving Hillary Clinton a run for her money, $27 at a time.

The insurgent Democratic presidential candidate's success with low-dollar online fundraising complements his denouncement of big money in politics.

When Sanders asks his supporters to chip in a few bucks, they respond with enthusiasm.

As a result, his campaign is setting ever-higher benchmarks for online fundraising, and that's helping him outraise Clinton in the first months of this year.

Sanders draws average contributions of $27. That's one-hundredth the legal maximum of $2,700, which is the more typical size of checks to presidential candidates including Clinton.

His fattening campaign bank account ensures he has the ability to wage a long primary battle.
