Saratoga Battlefield National Park Gets A 170-Acre Addition

STILLWATER, N.Y. (AP) — The Saratoga Battlefield National Historical Park is getting a 170-acre addition with the transfer of land from the nonprofit Open Space Institute to the National Park Service.

The nonprofit group says the parcel is in the town of Stillwater at the northeast end of the park. It's described as a key site in the Battle of Saratoga, considered the turning point of the American Revolution.

In September 1777, the parcel was surrounded by the British Army to the north and the American Army to the south. The British crossed the terrain to begin the first battle in the area, the battle at Freeman's Farm.

Officials say more than 102,000 people visited the battlefield park during 2016.
