SC Cop Indicted in Shooting Shrouded in Mystery
NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (AP) — The state trooper charged with felony assault for shooting an unarmed driver during a traffic stop isn't the only police officer in South Carolina facing charges in a shooting.
North Augusta Public Safety officer Justin Craven was indicted last month in the shooting death of a 68-year-old black man at the end of a 9-mile slow-speed chase in Edgefield County. Prosecutors asked a grand jury to indict the white officer on a felony charge of voluntary manslaughter, but they refused, charging him with misdemeanor misconduct in office instead.
Authorities are releasing little information about the case. The indictment just says Craven used excessive force when he shot and killed Ernest Satterwhite in his driveway on Feb. 9.
The State Law Enforcement Division hasn't released the evidence used to indict Craven.
