Police are searching for the person or persons responsible for nailing a cat to a tree in Schenectady, New York.

Schenectady Police Lieutenant Mark McCracken says that they were contacted yesterday, October 14, 2015 at approximately 3:46pm by the mother of two teenagers who were walking along a hiking trail in Steinmetz Park.

The teens found the cat, which was dead, nailed to a tree.  It is not known whether the cat was alive or dead before it was pinned.  The carcass has been sent to a veterinarian who will perform a necropsy.  If the animal was not dead prior to the incident McCracken says that the individual would be subject to felony charges in accordance with Buster's Law, which protects companion animals from torture and senseless killing.

However, if it turns out that the animal was dead before it was nailed to the tree it is possible that there would not be charges as it would be considered desecration of a dead animal.

Additionally investigators have not yet determined whether the animals was domestic or ferrel.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Schenectady Police Department at: (518) 382.5200.
