State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is proposing legislation to strengthen data security laws and protect consumers from the growing threat of data breaches.

New York state does not have a law directly requiring entities to institute data security measures to protect consumer's information.

The AG's bill would also broaden the scope of information that companies would be responsible for protecting.

Schneiderman says the new law would be the strongest and most comprehensive in the nation.

The Attorney General's office says security breaches at businesses, nonprofits and governments in New York more than tripled between 2006 and 2013, exposing 22.8 million personal records of New Yorkers in nearly 5,000 incidents.
