New York (WIBX) - Senator Chuck Schumer is throwing his support behind an amendment to keep rural post offices open, including 53 throughout New York.

The amendment to the 21st Century Postal Service Act would allow endangered rural post offices to stay open for two more years while further studies are completed.

Schumer also introduced an amendment keeping door-to-door delivery available. The current Senate bill proposes apartment-style boxes to be built in neighborhoods, further from homes.

But, Schumer says the proposal would hurt residents, saying quote, "Hundreds of thousands of Upstate seniors and businesses rely on rural post offices and door-to-door delivery in every corner of the state."

The 21st Century Postal Service Act is being debated in the Senate.
