In response to Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx's call for Congress to keep unsafe rental cars off the road, Senator Charles Schumer is re-introducing the Safe Rental Car Act.

The legislation would make it illegal for rental companies to rent cars that are under a manufacturer recall before the defect has been fixed.

“Cars under recall should be off the road until they're fixed, whether they come from a dealer or a renter's lot. I'm pleased that Secretary Foxx, General Motors, and many others strongly support this common sense legislation that would save lives and make our roads much safer. I'm hopeful that Democrats and Republicans can come together this Congress and get this bill over the finish line.”

The act would also hold rental companies to the same standards as car dealers for the first time, as dealers are banned from selling vehicles under recall until the problems are fixed.
