New York, NY (WIBX) - New York Senator Charles Schumer is warning back to school shoppers about dangerous items on the shelves. 

Schumer says a Center for Health, Environment and Justice study shows 75 percent of vinyl back to school items like backpacks and binders have a high level of phthalates which are banned in toys.

Schumer's urging the Senate to pass the Safe Chemicals Act which would give the Environmental Protection Agency the authority to restrict such chemicals that can't be proven safe.
