New York State Senator Thomas Libous’ son, Matthew, will be spending six months in jail for tax fraud charges.

The younger Libous was sentenced in Federal Court in White Plains May 18 after the 37 year old was found guilty of failing to pay all due taxes from 2007 to 2009 and not repaying all the money after he was convicted in January.

Senator Libous had asked his son be spared jail time so he could be by the Republican’s side as Libous says he is dying of cancer.

The Binghamton Senator, himself, is due in Federal Court in July to face a charge that he lied to the FBI about allegedly using his influence as Deputy Majority Leader of the State Senate to broker a job for his son at a Westchester County law firm.

As for Matthew Libous, he could have faced a maximum sentence of three years in prison for each of the three charges that had been lodged against him.

In addition to the six months incarceration, Libous is to pay a $25,000 fine and serve 100 hours of community service.
