Following his father’s conviction on a count of giving false information to the FBI, former New York State Senator Thomas Libous’ son, Matthew, is now serving time in federal prison.

The 37 year old reported to a minimum security prison in Fort Dix, New Jersey on July 31.

The younger Libous was convicted on tax-fraud related charges on allegations he willfully failed to pay $38,843 in taxes between 2007 and 2009 and was sentenced to six months in prison.

The start of his sentence was delayed until the conclusion of his father’s trial.

The Senior Libous, a long-time Binghamton Republican politician, could face up to five years in prison.  Sentencing is set for October 30.

Libous, the former Deputy Senate Majority Leader, was immediately removed from the Senate upon his conviction.
