The state Senate has once again passed legislation that would extend the time between parole hearings for violent criminals.

Under current law, when parole is denied, the New York State Parole Board has the discretion to set the date of reconsideration for parole within two years.

The bill, co-sponsored by Senator James Seward, would allow the parole board to extend the period of time between reconsidering denials from two to five years.

The Senate has passed the legislation for five straight years, but the Assembly has never voted on the measure.

A companion bill has been introduced in the Assembly, where it has over 50 sponsors.
