The state Senate has passed legislation sponsored by Senator Joseph Griffo to protect municipalities and school districts from unfunded state mandates.

The bill would require certain state mandated programs imposed on local governments and school districts to be funded by the state.

Griffo says state mandated programs place local taxpayers and officials in the position of paying for services they didn't budget for.

The legislation will now be sent to the Assembly, where it's sponsored by Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi.
