GENESEO, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say they're searching for an "armed and dangerous" man a day after a police officer fired a shot at the man during a traffic stop in western New York.

Livingston County Sheriff Thomas Dougherty says a Geneseo police officer made a stop for a "simple traffic law violation" at around 5:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Dougherty says man and woman were in a car with North Carolina license plates.

The sheriff says the man pointed a weapon and the officer fired a round in response before the pair fled. The woman was caught a short time later.

Dougherty identified the man as David Clyde Morgan of Wilmington, North Carolina. The sheriff says Morgan has a violent history and has served prison time.

Police from several agencies are searching a rural area 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Rochester.
