Brian Matusz (1-3) allowed just one earned run over 6 1/3 innings, picking up his first win of the season in a  7-1 romp of the Yankees in the Bronx as manager Buck Showalter collected career win 1,000.

Chris Davis had three hits, including his fifth home run of the year, while J.J. Hardy added a two-run blast off of Phil Hughes to put Baltimore up 3-1. And, Nick Johnson broke out of a nasty funk, picking up his first hit and RBI of the season. Johnson started the year 0 for 29 - he's now batting .033.

Hughes struck out six over 5 2/3 innings, while allowing four runs on four hits. The loss sets Hughes back to 1-4, with a ERA of 7.48.

Eduardo Nunez was charged with his third error of the year, a mistake that cost the Yanks (13-10) two runs in the sixth inning.

The Yankees 1-2-3 hitters had all of the team's seven hits. The rest of the lineup was 0 for 27. Jeter raised his average to .400 with three more hits. Curtis Granderson and Alex Rodriguez each had two.

Baltimore (15-9) moves to within a game for AL East division leader Tampa. New York is 2.5 back.
