Utica, NY (WIBX) - A father used a Samurai sword to attack the boyfriend of his children's mother. However, he missed his intended target with the first strike and hit one of his children in the head instead.

That's according to Utica police who arrested 42-year-old Thar Kyi, charging him with multiple felonies. Officials say the man ran into the mother of his children's home wielding the sword to strike her boyfriend, who was getting the 8-year-old victim ready for school.

The child and adult victim both sustained cuts from the attack and were treated at a local hospital. The suspect who had an active order of protection against him fled to Syracuse after the assault, but was subsequently apprehended and taken to jail.

Thar Kyi is facing the following charges:

  • 1st Degree Assault, a Class B felony
  • 2nd Degree Assault, a Class D felony
  • 1st Degree Burglary, a Class B felony
  • Criminal Contempt, misdemeanor
  • Criminal Possession of a weapon, misdemeanor

According to UPD, investigators in the warrants unit, assigned to the U.S. Marshal's N.Y./N.J. Regional Fugitive Task Force developed information that the suspect fled to the Syracuse area. The Task force with the assistance of the State Police Violent Felony Warrants Unit and Oneida County Probation located the man and brought him back to Utica.
