The Utica Fire Department's Sunset Avenue firehouse is now operating with Advanced Life Support capabilities.

Due to previous budget and manpower cuts, South Utica was being served at a Basic Support Level.

Utica Fire Chief Russ Brooks says the initiative will impact mortality rates in South Utica and possibly throughout the city.  Brooks says it's like bringing the emergency room to one's front door in a matter of a couple minutes.

Advanced Life Support provides more advanced medical help to patients in transit.

ALS includes the ability to take a cardiogram and send it to the hospital before transporting the patient there.
