Spectrum Cable Parent Agrees to $13 Million Deal

The company that acquired Time Warner Cable has agreed to a $13 million settlement with New York state regulators for not expanding its network as it had promised.

Charter Communications now provides cable television service through its Spectrum unit to millions of former Time Warner customers across the state.

The Public Service Commission on Tuesday announced the potential settlement with Charter.

The agency said Charter failed to meet the expansion requirements that were attached to its approval of the Time Warner deal last year.

As of last month, the company had added less than half of the additional homes and businesses called for in a first-year target.

Charter is to develop a plan within 60 days to inform New Yorkers whether they will be part of the company's network expansion.

The commission will accept public comment on the proposed deal with the company. After that, the commission will decide whether to approve the settlement.

According to the agency, Charter through its Spectrum unit is the largest cable provider in New York state.
