‘Star Trek 3′ Adds New Writers and Loses Alex Kurtzman

Star Trek
Paramount

Though ‘Star Trek Into Darkness‘ producer/director J.J. Abrams has his attentions elsewhere, ‘Star Trek 3‘ is moving forward, with Joe Cornish the most recent director rumored to take Abrams’ place. Now it appears the writer’s room has had a bit of a shake-up as J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay have joined the film, while Alex Kurtzman has jumped off the project.

But, according to The Hollywood Reporter, that doesn’t mean Kurtzman’s writing partner Roberto Orci jumped ship as he’s still attached to write it. This would be the first time (it looks like ever) that Orci has worked professionally without Kutzman. the newly added writers Payne and McKay are relative novices as they have had projects in development previously (the duo worked on adapting the graphic novel ‘Boilerplate’ for Abrams), but have yet to have their work filmed.

Paramount seems anxious to make the film as recently star  suggested they might start shooting in 2014, though the film is set to be a little cheaper than ‘Into Darkness’ because that film didn’t live up to its box office expectations, possibly because of the Khan controversy that Abrams recently addressed. And considering how long it’s been since we’ve heard the names Jon M. Chu and Cornish discussed as directors, it seems likely that they’re targeting someone else to helm the new entry. At this point we’re guessing Paramount is hoping to get the film in theaters by 2016.
