OGDENSBURG, N.Y. (AP) — A state official will meet with leaders of an effort in a northern New York community to increase tourism at a historic site dating back to the French Colonial era.

The Watertown Daily Times reports (bit.ly/1T3qw7B) the Department of State is sending a resource specialist to Thursday's meeting of an advisory committee overseeing a project aimed at boosting tourism in Ogdensburg, home to the Fort la Presentation site.

In the mid-18th century, the French built a fort and settlement where the Oswegatchie River flows into the St. Lawrence River.

A local group wants to build an interpretive center, walking trail and other amenities at the site, which has connections to the French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War, and the War of 1812.

The site is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.
