RAY BROOK, N.Y. (AP) — State police are warning people to beware of phone scams that have victimized some northern New York residents.

Police say several phone scams have been reported around Clinton, Franklin, Essex and St. Lawrence counties. All of them involve solicitations of money under false pretenses.

In one, a woman was told she had won a sweepstakes prize but first needed to send in money to claim her prize via a wire transfer. In another scam, a man falsely identifying himself as a police officer told a man he needed to wire $500 to get his grandchild out of jail.

A third involved a woman revealing her credit card numbers to a scammer who promised to pay off her credit card debt.
