Albany, NY (WIBX) - The Senate has approved legislation eliminating the state gas tax for three key holiday weekends  to help families cope with the rising cost at the pump.

Senator Jim Seward says the legislation would suspend state taxes on gasoline and diesel fuel for the Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends, saving motorists 33-cents a gallon.

Seward says if a locality with a four-percent tax rates opts into the expemption, there will be an additional 15-cents per gallon savings.

He say that would save the average family with two cars nearly $100 for all three holidays.
