A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for a storm that is expected to bring significant snow, bitterly cold temperatures, and gusting winds to Central New York.

Winter Storm Harper is expected to slam Central New York with significant snowfall Saturday afternoon into Sunday afternoon, with winds gusting up to 35 MPH and a wind chill that could reach into the -20s by Sunday.

Winter Storm Harper could make travel nearly impossible with rates of snowfall of 1" - 2" per hour expected.

Utica and Rome could see between 12"-20" of accumulation, while Boonville and Syracuse can expect 11" - 17".

The National Weather Service also cautions "Continue preparations for the storm; but don’t forget, also be ready for the bitter Arctic cold / dangerously low wind chills that will immediately follow the storm midday Sunday through Monday."

* WHAT...Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 12 to 20
inches expected. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph Sunday
afternoon, with areas of blowing and drifting snow.

* WHERE...In New York,
Steuben, Schuyler, Chemung, Tompkins, Madison, Southern
Oneida, Cortland, Chenango, Otsego, Tioga, Broome and Delaware
counties.


* WHAT...Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 11 to 17
inches expected. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph Sunday
afternoon, with areas of blowing and drifting snow.

* WHERE...Northern Oneida, Yates, Seneca, Southern Cayuga and
Onondaga counties.


* WHEN...From noon Saturday to 4 PM EST Sunday. The heaviest snow

is expected to fall Saturday evening into Sunday morning.
Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are expected during
this time.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Travel could be very difficult to
impossible. Also, winds will pick up considerably Sunday
afternoon, causing blowing snow and dangerously low wind
chills into Sunday night.

A Winter Storm Warning for snow means severe winter weather
conditions will make travel very hazardous or impossible. If you
must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your
vehicle in case of an emergency.
