NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a 79-year-old man is dead after he was shot with what police believe is a stray bullet outside a bodega in Westchester County.

Police say Manuel Ayala was sitting outside in New Rochelle on Saturday when a bullet struck him in the chest just after 11 p.m. He was pronounced dead at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx.

Surveillance video shows the man sitting outside, then standing up and staggering as he grabbed his back and chest before others came to his aid.

Police Commissioner Patrick Carroll told The Journal News on Sunday that police have some leads about the shooter. He says they don't believe Ayala was the intended target and the bullet was a "wild shot" fired from a distance away.
