Supermarket To Donate $500 To Cover Theft Of Red Kettle

WALLKILL, N.Y. (AP) — A supermarket chain says it will donate hundreds of dollars to the Salvation Army after one of the organization's holiday donation kettles was stolen from outside the company's store in a Hudson Valley town.

Police in the town of Wallkill say a Salvation Army volunteer told officers that he man made off with the red collection bucket and tripod that was set up in front of the ShopRite supermarket Saturday evening.

Police say the man was seen fleeing on foot.

Salvation Army officials estimate the volunteer had collected about $500 in the red kettle before the theft.

Keasbey, New Jersey-based ShopRite announced Tuesday that it will match that amount and donate another $100 to the Salvation Army.

Police are checking the store's surveillance video in an effort to identify the thief.
