Surveillance Cameras Show Men Damaging $80K Wooden Sculpture

LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (AP) — Police are seeking the public's help in identifying the people who damaged a lakeside wooden sculpture that was unveiled in the Adirondacks last year.

The Warren County Sheriff's Office says surveillance images taken on the night of Sept. 2 show a group of people at the 24-foot sculpture depicting colonial British scout Robert Rogers and five American Indians in a canoe. The $80,000 sculpture was unveiled a year ago this month along Lake George's southern shore.

Deputies say surveillance cameras showed two men, one of them shirtless, climbing the fence surrounding the sculpture and sitting and reclining on the artwork, causing damage to parts of the carving.

Local sculptor Paul Stark spent three months last summer creating the sculpture. The Post-Star of Glens Falls reports that he'll repair the damage.
