Utica, NY (WIBX) - Military retirees or soon to be retirees are getting some important data that could maximize their military benefits as well as get the most bang for their buck. A new report by USAA and Military dot com puts Syracuse at the number 10 spot as the best City for military retirees to call home and at number 7 on the large Metro sublist.

June Walbert, Certified Financial Planner with USAA said, "We did a top ten overall list and then a Military towns list because there's a lot of people that feel very comfortably living in and around the Military and they want to keep it that way and some people want to live in a more urban environment like Syracuse." Walbert explained that the findings will help retiring Military personell maximize their Military benefits.

Ward Carroll, Editor for Military.com said, "Maybe arguably the biggest variable of all is there is no taxation on Military pensions in New York. The median home price in the Syracuse area is below the national average at $125,200.00. Obviously you have fantastic educational opportunities there in the form of Syracuse and Colgate and six other local institutions of note." Carroll is also a Military retiree who spent 20 years in the Navy. He said the reason educational institutions are factored into the research is because many retiring Military personnel are interested in continuing their education after leaving the Military. Carroll said other perks that put Syracuse in the number 10 and 7 spot on the list include the proximity to Fort Drum and the local VA Hospital.

According to the findings the number one place for Military retirees to call home is Texas.
