Syracuse Announces Expansion Of Police Body Camera Program

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — The Syracuse Police Department says 90 officers will soon be outfitted with body cameras thanks to an award from New York state.

The department is finishing up its creation of a policy governing use of the cameras and the $30,000 grant will pay for the launch and operation of the program for a year. Syracuse.com reports the department currently has 16 officers using body-worn cameras in a pilot program.

Deputy Chief Joe Cecile says the public can expect most of their interactions with police will be recorded. Cecile says police will not record interviews with sexual assault victims or when conducting investigations in places like bathrooms.

Officials say video will be released publicly following an investigation's conclusion.
