SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Officials in Syracuse have approved a proposed eight-story building with apartments and retail space in the Marshall Street area next to the Syracuse University campus.

The Syracuse Planning Commission on Monday night voted unanimously to approve a plan to demolish two properties on Crouse Street. The Post-Standard reports (http://bit.ly/2kIavdy) that the buildings will be replaced by a combined apartment and retail center built by BLVD Equities.

Previous hearings were stymied by concerns about the lack of on-site parking for the building. However, commission members waived the parking requirement after an explanation from the developers.

The proposal states that the current owners of both buildings will sell their properties to the New Jersey-based developer, who hasn't released a timeline for the project.

The buildings are home to a bar and other businesses popular with Syracuse students.
