Syracuse To Purchase Two New Fire Trucks For $2 Million

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — The Syracuse Common Council has approved the disbursement of $2 million for the purchase of two new fire trucks for the central New York city's fire department.

The Post-Standard reports (http://bit.ly/2iXjWmg ) Fire Chief Paul Linnertz said last week that several vehicles in the department's fleet are getting close to the end of their useful lifetime.

Industry standards suggest that a fire engine should be used as a "first-line" truck for a decade before becoming a reserve truck for about another five years.

Linnertz called the new Sutphen Aerial Tower trucks a bargain. The last engine that the city purchased cost $1.4 million alone. The fire department is also saving money by salvaging parts from decommissioned trucks.

Linertz says there's a fire truck within two-and-a-half miles of any point in Syracuse.
