His identity has not yet been confirmed but officials believe that a suicide bomber responsible for a weekend bombing in Syria is American.

If true, it would be the first time an American national was responsible for a suicide bombing.

The main al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria, the Nusra Front, claimed responsibility for the attack on the City of Homs.

The group released a statement on its Twitter feed on Monday, May 26, 2014.

At least ten people were killed during the car bombing on Sunday, May 25, 2014.  Rebels and forces in support of the government had agreed to a truce weeks before.  Some in Syria worry that the attack puts that agreement in jeopardy.

NBC News was the first agency to confirm that the suspected bomber was an American citizen.  The New York Times is reporting that officials who have spoken on condition of anonymity have said that the suspect is indeed an American, but are not releasing his identity.
