Utica, NY (WIBX) - A Utica city council candidate wants drug testing to be mandatory for elected officials and political appointments.

Utica's Democratic candidate Larry Tanoury says most people working in the private sector have to take mandatory drug tests, so it's only fair that those entrusted with the people's business do the same.

Tanoury says if he is elected, this proposal would help restore the trust in local government.

"The people of Utica have had enough of the scandals and questionable behavior; it’s about time we clean up city hall and start working to restore the public’s trust," he said. "If elected, I would certainly hope to have my colleagues’ support on this initiative, which works hand-in-hand with my previous proposal for an Ethics Commission.”

The drug testing would be random, and take place at an outside clinic.
